The heavy clampdown by West Pakistan forced East Pakistan’s Bengalis to migrate to the neighbouring countries, and India saw the largest influx of refugees. According to Indian government data, around 8-9 million migrants took shelter in 829 refugee camps, to escape mass killing, rape and destruction. Bengali men, women and children had rushed to India, defying many odds that brought about untold sufferings and death. Soon the youth from all over East Pakistan crossed the border to reorganise themselves, be trained to join the anti-Pakistan army resistance, as militias like the Mukti Bahini.
