The growing resentment among the population of East Pakistan with the high handed behaviour of the West Pakistan, which treated its Bengali Muslims as second class citizens to the powerful Punjabi Muslims of West Pakistan. This difference of identity and culture had stemmed immediately after partition when Urdu was made the only official language of the Pakistan, much to the dismay and resentment of the Bengali speaking population of East Pakistan. Stay tuned for more

1971: The Birth of a Nation Episode 1 | East Vs West Chapter 1

The heavy clampdown by West Pakistan forced East Pakistan’s Bengalis to migrate to the neighbouring countries, and India saw the largest influx of refugees. According to Indian government data, around 8-9 million migrants took shelter in 829 refugee camps, to escape mass killing, rape and destruction. Bengali men, women and children had rushed to India, defying many odds that brought about untold sufferings and death. Soon the youth from all over East Pakistan crossed the border to reorganise themselves, be trained to join the anti-Pakistan army resistance, as militias like the Mukti Bahini.

1971: The Birth of a Nation Episode 2 | Exodus

With no western support, India was running out of options to end the crisis peacefully. As war clouds were looming on the horizon, India’s generals were making their plans for action. Equipment and infrastructure was put in place and the engineers worked even during the monsoons for the impending war.

1971: The Birth of a Nation Episode 3 | Last Resort

India’s intelligence agencies and R&AW had been working long before the war finally started. The inputs provided by these agencies ensured that India could be well prepared to safeguard its territory, and push its operational plans.

1971: The Birth of a Nation Episode 4 | Grand Strategy

The success of the Indian armed forces was not only because of preparedness, but also because of the masterly diplomacy of Mrs Indira Gandhi in the months leading up to the war. She had travelled around the world convincing the world about the atrocities unleashed by West Pakistan. She succeeded and gradually changed public perception and diplomatic opinion while effectively cutting off all supplies to East Pakistan.

1971: The Birth of a Nation Episode 5 | Friends And Foes

In East Pakistan, Indian forces were gaining territory with the support of Mukti-Bahini on the ground. In the west, Indian troops were more in a defensive-offensive posture and had fought some tough battles in this sector as well. The Battles of Longewala, Chahro Raid, Dera Baba Nanak, NangiTekri, and Chamb-Shakargarh had kept the enemy engaged.

1971: The Birth of a Nation Episode 6 | 13 Days

Yahya Khan made another attempt for UN intervention by claiming that a small country was being attacked by a large country. But Mrs. Gandhi refused to accept any resolution which was against the Indian interest.
